Vilhjálmur Egilsson is the Rector of Bifröst University a business school located in the Icelandic countryside. Bifröst University is a 100 year old institution that was established as a trade school but upgraded to the university level 30 years ago and is now a leader in online education in Iceland. Vilhjálmur has been the Rector of Bifröst University since 2013 which has been a period of drastic change. 80% of the students who joined the university in autumn 2018 attend study lines or online programmes that did not exist in 2013. Bifröst University has specialised in serving older students with labour market experience.
Vilhjálmur has been in leadership roles for most of his career. He has served as Director General for the Iceland Chamber of Commerce and the Confederation of Icelandic Employers, two major business organisations in Iceland. He has been a member of the Executive Board of the IMF and Director General of the Icelandic Ministry of Fisheries. Vilhjálmur was a Member of Parliament in Iceland for 12 years. Vilhjálmur is married and father of four and grandfather of five children.
